Austrian migration to the United States began on a small scale during the colonial period and expanded significantly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Early arrivals included German-speaking Protestants, merchants, artisans, farmers, labourers, and political refugees. Migration increased as industrialisation, poverty, military obligations, and political tensions encouraged people to leave the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Because the empire included many ethnic and linguistic communities, American records often classified immigrants according to their birthplace rather than a distinct Austrian identity. Another important migration wave followed Nazi Germany’s annexation of Austria in 1938, when Jewish families, political opponents, artists, academics, scientists, and professionals attempted to escape persecution.
Austrian Migration Before the Twentieth Century
Austrian migration to North America remained relatively limited before the nineteenth century. Some of the earliest arrivals were Protestants from Salzburg who had been expelled because of religious persecution and later established communities in the British colonies. During the nineteenth century, political unrest, agricultural hardship, unemployment, population growth, and the expansion of industrial employment encouraged greater movement from Austrian lands.
