The 2014 Diaspora World Cup was one of the most surprising and unpredictable soccer leagues in the history of the Diaspora. Held at Paint Branch High School, it was the first Diaspora World Cup ever to be hosted entirely in various High School stadiums. The tournament left a lasting mark not only due to its shocking outcomes but also because of the new faces and exciting performances.
It was a tournament where several traditional powerhouses faltered. Notably, Nigeria, the defending champions, were eliminated in the group stage, making them the first Diaspora World Cup holders in history to fail to make it past the opening round. Its struggles were shocking given their strong squad, which included the likes of former DC United midfielder Kunle Banjo, Charles Koroma, Edgerton Camara and Patrick Putu. However, poor performances and an early exit from the competition were clear signs of internal turmoil and aging players. Their group stage losses to Armenia and Cameroon sealed their fate, leaving fans and experts alike stunned by their early departure.
