Ethiopian defender and Guinean Striker during the game at Heurich Stadium
Guinea Head Coach Kissima will be delighted with what he saw on Saturday. The Diaspora team of Guinea was far and away the superior side against Ethiopia at the Heurich stadium and cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win. Conversely, Kissima's Ethiopian counterpart, Teddy, will no doubt be looking for a considerably more competitive display against Brazil on June 7. Following are three things we learned from the match.
1. Ethiopia’s defense is a Major Weak Spot: The team was abysmal in defense this past Saturday, and their shortcomings were only made clearer when Guinea scored its first goal. The only bright spot for Teddy, as far as his defense is concerned, will have been the play of right-back Danny.
2. Ethiopia is now an outsider in Group A: Ethiopia will continue their diaspora World Cup campaign against a very stingy Brazilian side, with both Nigeria and Swaziland waiting. If Saturday’s game was any indication, DC Ethiostars's schedule will reach its conclusion at that point. Given how much they concede possession—never mind their mistakes in defense—it’s almost unfathomable that they could somehow get out of the group and be qualify for the knockout stage.
3. Guinea have now giving themselves something to build on Thanks to Head Coach Kissima and General Manager Tamsir Camara: Guinea will contest a pair of group games the following next four weeks, against Botswana, Swaziland, Nigeria and Cameroon. It may even be one group game too many. Kissima will have been delighted with his side’s display against Ethiopia this past weekend and likely needs just one more match to settle on his starting XI for the knockout stage game starting July 19th. After a tempestuous and difficult three years season, they have finally found some momentum. If they can successfully build off their 2-0 win and overcome some players' injury, look out.
